Bollywood Shoes – Makeover with Shoe Attitude

Ever since I discovered Shoe Attitude printable film, I’ve decorated a lot of shoes, but these could be my all-time favorites. I wanted to create some custom shoes for my friend Joanne’s birthday, so I found these plain white sneakers at H&M and decided to spin some Shoe Attitude magic on them. Joanne loves Indian culture and art, and she loves her cat Opie, so I put them on the shoes, to make some snazzy Bollywood sneakers. For these sneakers, I tried something new: adding some sequined trim along the stitching. The trim not only added some bedazzlement, it also hid imperfections where sections met, and reinforced the Shoe Attitude film at the edges. These shoes! OMG!

What I used:

White Keds-like sneakers from H&M

Images from Dover’s “Designs from India” Book and CD Rom.

Elmer’s Extreme Glue Stick

Sequined trim from Joann Fabrics

Beacon Adhesives Fabri-Tac

These are the plain sneakers “before.”

I sized the images to fit the sections of the sneakers and printed them on the Shoe Attitude film.

Working a section at a time, I rubbed a glue stick on the surface. I used Elmer’s new “Extreme” glue stick.

Position the Shoe Attitude film ink side down on the glued surface and smooth with your fingers.

Trim the excess film with a craft knife. Then continue with the other sections.

I used Fabritac to glue sequined trim to the seams. The trim hid all the imperfections.

Here are the finished sneakers. Hooray for Bollywood!

Steampunk Spats: A Sneak Peek at My CHA Outfit

The CHA show in Anaheim is just a few weeks away, and I’ll be saying hi to everyone at the Craft Attitude booth, which will sport a hot air balloon theme of “Around the World in 80 Projects.” I’ll be all decked out in steampunk, and here’s a little tease of part of my outfit – the spats that I decorated with Shoe Attitude printable film.

I bought some white spats on eBay. I knew they would be easy to decorate because they’re vinyl, and Shoe Attitude goes on vinyl like buttah. The spats had three sections divided by stitching, so I decided to create three different digital collages on Photoshop, sized to fit each section. I created the collages with a Victorian grunge background designed by freaky665.deviantart.com, and vintage images from the Graphics Fairy. I printed them out on my inkjet printer in reverse, since I would be flipping them over ink side down.

Then, like I do when I decorate shoes with Shoe Attitude, I rubbed a glue stick on the surface of the spats. I worked a section at a time, and used a finger to even out the glue and get into the nooks and crannies.

Peeling the film from its protecting backing, I placed the film ink side down onto the glued surface. I rubbed the film down with my fingers, and then removed the excess film with an X-acto knife. I used the stitching as my guide when cutting.

One of the sections had snaps, and the film would not lay flat, so I removed the film around the snaps, and all was well with the world.

Then I did the same with the other spat. (Is that singular for spats? Or Spatus?) These look awesome with my Cole Haan wingtip boots. And be sure to come see these in person (and me, too, of course) at the Craft Attitude booth if you’re planning on going to CHA.

Comic Book Sneakers

I discovered the wonders of Kodak Shoe Art Film aka Shoe Attitude at the CHA 2012 Anaheim Show, and became an instant fan. In fact, I was such a fan that I’ve become a designer and spokesperson for the company, using the shoe art film to make all kinds of things that have nothing to do with shoes. Yes, the product is that versatile. I still love decorating shoes, though, and here are one of the favorites I’ve made. I found vintage public domain comic books online and printed them on the film, and then applied the film to my Converse All-Stars. I guess you can say, this is how I get my “kicks.” Check out the video below for my scintillating how-to video.
