My dear friends just had a baby boy, and I wanted to make a little something for the little guy. Well, it just so happened that this month for Eileen Hull’s design inspiration team, we got to play with Kunin Felt, and I thought how fun it would be to make a pair of felt baby booties. So I scoured my supply of Eileen’s Sizzix dies looking for something I could fashion booties from. (Of course, Eileen did have a bootie die from a few seasons back, but I don’t have it, and it’s no longer available.)

It must be all those geometry and calculus classes I had to take in school, but I figured out how to make a bootie using two of her dies: the Travel Trailer and the Adirondack Chair.

The Kunin felt went through the Big Shot die cutter like buttah. The main part of the shoe is from the travel trailer, and the trim is from the adirondack chair. I used two colors for contrast, and blue and yellow happened to be the colors for the baby shower.

Okay, notice that on the blue piece of felt, from the travel trailer die, there are more circular curves at the back and more angled curves at the front. The angled curved pieces in the front will be the front of the baby bootie. I overlapped the two front pieces together like I was making a cone and glued them together with Fast Grab Tacky Glue from Aleene’s. It holds on contact so you don’t have to wait around for it to dry. I left an opening at the bottom of the “cone” though, since I didn’t want a point-toed bootie. And we’ll be using that opening later.

Then I overlapped the two round sections in the back and glued them together.

I rolled the top edges down and glued them to form a “collar” for the bootie.

Next, I took the piece from the adirondack chair die and put that through the front and back openings, with the rounded part in front.

I folded up the rounded part in front and glued it down to form the toe cap. It’s looking more like a bootie now, right? And in the back, I tucked the contrasting felt piece on the inside, gluing that in place as well.

We need laces for our bootie, so I punched two holes in the front for them with a Fiskars 1/16″ hand punch. I couldn’t believe how easily the punch was able to cleanly go through two layers of felt. Yay!

Then I just thread some cord through the holes and tied the laces.

I just love the way they turned out. The way the felt overlaps in the front at an angle gives the booties a really hip style. (Oh, if you’re making a pair, overlap the two in opposite directions.) And I love the little contrast details. These will make a very sweet keepsake gift for my friends’ baby. Now I hope more friends have babies so I can make more booties. But I’m not helping change diapers. Uncle Jonathan has to draw the line somewhere.

Disclosure: I received Sizzix, Kunin Felt and Aleene’s products to create the project in this post. I did not get paid. (As if.) All opinions are truthful and are mine.
