Retro TV Picture Frame: Hometalk & Michaels Pinterest Party

I am delighted to announce the upcoming Hometalk & Michaels Pinterest Party, this Sunday Feb. 16 from 1-4 PM. All the Michaels stores will be crafting heaven, and I will be hosting the party at the Michaels in Hawthorne/Manhattan Beach at 14370 Ocean Gate Avenue. There will be specific Pinterest-inspired displays to look at, so pick your project, buy your supplies, and join me in the classroom to create your own own pin-worthy creation.Party Promo graphic

One of the projects featured is the wooden frame, which I chose to put my spin on. I wanted to pick something really affordable that people could do, and this frame is only $1. I decided to turn the frame into a retro television set, so whoever you put in the frame becomes a classic TV star. retro_frame

Here are the supplies I used, all from Michaels. This project costs less than $10 in total materials:

1) Wood frame

2) Wood design scrapbook paper

3) Glitter cardstock

4) Knitting needles

5) Large buttonsframe1

STEP 1

Cut a piece of the wood design scrapbook paper so it’s just bigger than the frame. Glue it to the frame, and then use a craft knife to cut away the excess paper. You can use a glue stick or spray adhesive to glue the paper to the frame. I actually used a Xyron Creative Station because I got it for Christmas a couple of years ago and I love to use it. I love how the wood paper looks so real, and now the frame has a rich veneer.

Trim the glitter cardstock to fit in the frame. (I used the picture/label that came with the frame as a template.) Then cut a hole in the middle of the cardstock. You can use a craft knife or punch. I took out my Sizzix die cutting machine for an instant oval. frame3

STEP 3:

To make the channel selector and volume dials, glue some buttons on the front of the frame. Wow, remember when televisions had only a few stations on the dial? And you were lucky if you had both UHF and VHF stations?frame4

STEP 4:

My favorite part of this retro TV frame is the rabbit ears antenna. I walked all over Michaels looking for the perfect thing to make antenna, and lo and behold I found these cool knitting needles. They come in all kinds of fun colors too. Just hot glue gun these to the back of the frame, and you’re done.
