Vintage keys were the theme for this wedding, so besides incorporating keys in the bouquets and boutonnieres, the escort cards were keys hanging on branches. I anchored down the branches with vintage books, so I carried out the literary motif on the table numbers.

Hot Air Balloon Centerpieces

For this Parisian-themed wedding reception, I created vintage hot air balloon centerpieces. Instead of table numbers, each table was a place in Paris, like the Tour Eiffel table. So I customized each hot air balloon with images of these Parisian landmarks right on the fabric. The balloons were also lit from within by LED lights. Yeah, they were a lot of work. Yeah, it was a chore taking it to the Beverly Hills Fire Department to prove it wasn’t a fire hazard. But it was magnifique in the end.

Allyson and Ricky’s Wedding

For Allyson and Ricky’s wedding, I wanted to capture the bride’s love of vintage, French country, and shabby chic in a unique way. So instead of traditional centerpieces, I created different vignettes at each table that featured vintage birdcages, books, topiaries, and other pieces that would give this occasion an old world air.

My Niece’s Wedding

My niece Lauren asked me to design her wedding, and the big challenge really was that the church she was getting married in wasn’t that photogenic. So my strategy was to draw the eyes away from the 80s teal carpet. I strung hundreds of silk rose petals that we suspended above the pews, so it would look like petals were falling on Lauren as she walked down the aisle. It was a really ambitious plan, and I was halfway hoping she, or the church, would veto the idea, but everyone said yes, so I had to deliver. It turned out beautifully, and it was so sad when we had to take it down right after the ceremony.

Baseball Bar Mitzvah

I was asked to do a Bar Mitzvah. Sure! It was at the Ritz Carlton Marina Del Rey. Wonderful! I was told it was a baseball theme. Oh! I know you all think of me as a big jock, but my baseball expertise really isn’t that vast. But I know topiaries! So I made baseball topiaries, constructed from artificial turf, baseball bats, and balls. It was a feat of engineering to make it all stand up without collapsing, but they survived the event, and I still have a few as souvenirs. I’d say this was a home run. (See, I know my baseball terms.)

The Butterfly Effect

Once again, I went a little crazy with the glue gun. For this Valentine’s Day event in an art gallery for Amy’s Culinary Adventures, I first cut out thousands of butterflies on my Sizzix eClips die-cutting machine, and then glued them onto manzanita branches. The effect was really mesmerizing. And it saved me from having to buy fresh flowers during Valentine’s week, the worst week to buy flowers.

Jacqui and Howard’s Wedding

The Inn of the Seventh Ray in Topanga Canyon, California is such an idyllic spot for a wedding. I love the orange color scheme that Jacqui chose. It’s bright, cheerful and delicious. For this wedding, I also got to create my first chuppah. I chuppah you like the photos.

Flying Pig Centerpieces

For the Makin’ Bacon dinner from Amy’s Underground Dinners, which took place at the beautiful LightSpace Studio in Culver City, I went with the theme “When Pigs Fly,” which made me forget, at least temporarily, that I was eating pork. I made hundreds of flying pigs with my Sizzix eClips electronic die-cutting machine, and they flew from the tips of orange IKEA umbrellas. These sat in 40-inch glass vases filled with orange ping pong balls and tropical flowers.
